Rico Turns Nine

Referencing a photograph of us on a sunny Australian afternoon, it shows us riding the bus home from school—an everyday moment made extraordinary by the simple joy of being together. My brother, Rico, is happily sipping a strawberry smoothie, his face lit by the warm glow of the sun as we share this quiet, peaceful ride.

The creative process behind this piece was both personal and experimental. I used Adobe Fresco to bring the scene to life, starting with a detailed sketch to capture the natural, relaxed feel of the moment. The vibrant colours of the bus, the soft textures of the smoothie, and the clear blue sky all came together using a variety of brushes, blending techniques, and subtle layer work. I focused on creating a sense of lightness and warmth—both in the environment and in the bond we share—while keeping the illustration loose and lively, reflecting the carefree nature of childhood.
